Dr. Lachlan Whyborn
Research Software Engineer
Lachlan is a Research Software Engineer in the Land Surface Modelling Team at ACCESS-NRI.
Lachlan’s role is to support the development of the CABLE land surface model by improving useability and flexibility, both internally and through external tools. He enjoys the problem-solving aspect of developing simulation software, coming up with clever solutions for difficult software design problems that work for a wide range of users is a satisfying job.
Lachlan has PhD in Hypersonic Fluid Dynamics, awarded by the University of Queensland in 2023. Thesis title: Direct Numerical Simulations of Instabilities in the Entropy Layer over a Hypersonic Blunt Cone. Lachlan is experienced in writing coarse and fine grain parallel code with OpenMPI and CUDA respectively, and writes software in Fortran, C++, D and Julia (and Python when required).
Outside of work, Lachlan is a competitive sportsman – his main sports at the moment are squash and netball! He grew up playing tennis, soccer and touch football. He enjoys playing chess and making use of the national parks around Canberra for hiking.
