What we do at ACCESS-NRI
Computer models are the climate scientist’s equivalent of laboratory experiments, allowing researchers to explore the intricate dynamics of our planet’s climate system. These models, just like instruments in a laboratory, need continuous maintenance and support to ensure their outputs are reliable, reproducible, and replicable.
Model development requires close collaboration between technical experts—who focus on computational methods and software engineering, and scientific experts—who provide the necessary domain knowledge in climate science and related fields.
At ACCESS-NRI, we enable research and connect research software engineers and researchers through:
- Model development: We work across all the different areas of ACCESS-NRI and engage with the different ACCESS Community Working Groups and international collaborators to co-design the models in response to the ACCESS community needs.
- Support for researchers: Our team assists researchers in using these tools confidently and efficiently. We provide tools, documentation, training and direct expert technical support to researchers. The ACCESS Model is hosted at the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) and we facilitate the use of NCI computational and storage resources for community members.
- Community engagement: We provide an open platform for researchers to ask questions, share challenges and solve problems.
Our team works on developing the next version of the ACCESS Model, which will then contribute to the models we will use for the current phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP7), an international climate modelling project that feeds major international reports on climate change.
Engage with us
We foster collaboration to build a better collective understanding of the Earth’s complex systems and improve the accuracy of our models and simulations.
Our six ACCESS Community Working Groups hold meetings that are open to all, especially early-career researchers and students. Our main channel of engagement with the community is the ACCESS-Hive Forum, which is open to everyone. Learn how to join the ACCESS Community Working groups and the discussion in the ACCESS-Hive Forum.
