Australia was strongly represented at the recent CMIP2026 Community Workshop in Japan, where a growing and increasingly diverse global community of Earth system scientists came together to explore the future of climate modelling. Our colleagues have returned energised, inspired, and full of fresh ideas for how Australia can contribute to the next phase of CMIP.

To share these insights, the NESP Climate Systems Hub invites you to an online seminar unpacking the major themes, scientific advances, and strategic directions emerging from CMIP2026.

This session will provide a snapshot of the latest developments in Earth System and coupled modelling, updates on CMIP6 analyses, and early results from CMIP7, including new experimental designs, MIPs, updated forcings, and the deepening connection between observations and models. We’ll also discuss ideas for strengthening Australia’s role in global collaborations, improving the climate information chain, and supporting a sustainable, long-term approach to climate projections.

Come along to catch up on what happened, understand its implications for Australian climate science, and help shape the path ahead.
