Visualising ACCESS outputs: selected projects 2025

October 2, 2025

Visualising ACCESS research: selected projects for our first round of Expressions of Interest (EoI).

In July 2025, ACCESS-NRI invited the ACCESS Community to submit expressions of interest for a 3-month visualisation collaboration. We were looking for projects that would transform ACCESS model outputs into high-impact visuals—compelling animations, videos, and 3D images that could elevate research visibility across media, conferences, and the broader scientific community.

The response was outstanding! Our evaluation panel reviewed 13 exceptional proposals and was impressed by both the diversity and quality of submissions from across the community.

The selected projects

We’re thrilled to announce the three projects selected for this inaugural round, which were revealed during the ACCESS Community Workshop in September:

Uncharted Futures (Pacific Warming Trends)

Authors: Christine Chung, Sugata Narsey (Bureau of Meteorology and NESP Uncharted Futures project), Zoe Gillet (Bureau of Meteorology), Ghyslaine Boschat (Bureau of Meteorology)

Growing Trees in Australia’s Earth System Model

Authors: Alexander Norton (CSIRO), Juergen Knauer (University of Technology Sydney), Lachlan Whyborn, (ACCESS-NRI), Alison Bennett (CSIRO) and Ian Harman (CSIRO)

Weather in High Definition: A Lens into Australia’s Atmosphere at Kilometer Scale

Authors: Bethan White (21st Century Weather, University of Melbourne), Mat Lipson (21st Century Weather UNSW), Paul Gregory (21st Century Weather, University of Melbourne), Yi Huang (University of Melbourne)

What’s Next?

Work on these selected projects begins now, with each team having three months to bring their visions to life (completion by July 2026).

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who submitted a proposal. The calibre of ideas made the selection incredibly difficult, and we wish we had the capacity to support more than three projects in this first round.

Stay tuned for updates as these visualisations take shape!
