Dr. Chermelle Engel
Principal Research Software Engineer

Chermelle is a Principal Research Software Engineer within the ACCESS-NRI Atmospheric Modelling Infrastructure group. Her role is to help facilitate use of the ACCESS model within the Australian modelling community.
After being awarded the John and Allan Gilmour Scholarship (Science) 2008 at The University of Melbourne, Chermelle went on to complete her PhD in Earth Sciences – Operational consensus forecasts and spatial verification methods.
Chermelle’s key areas of expertise are in: the use of numerical weather prediction data from multiple models for enhanced decision making (using statistical bias and random error characterisation); the use of in situ observations for data assimilation and observation monitoring; analysing high resolution nested ACCESS runs of significant fire-weather days (in both atmospheric and coupled fire-atmospheric modes); and the use of geostationary Himawari 8/9 satellite data to detect active fires, in real-time.
Her favourite aspect of work is getting to work with the ACCESS numerical weather prediction model, that has been built up over many years by a large and extremely talented community. Also, enabling the use of the ACCESS model data for in depth studies of impactful weather behaviour.
Outside of work, Chermelle loves to cook.
