Ocean Model team

About the team

The ocean absorbs a large part of the carbon we put into the atmosphere, and almost all the excess heat created from climate change. As a result, accurately modelling ocean dynamics is essential for understanding the broader impacts of climate change.

Our team focuses on developing and enhancing the ocean and sea ice components of our climate models, which are important for understanding Australia’s climate and weather. The ocean model integrates with land and atmosphere models to enable researchers to provide accurate representations of our Earth system.

We work closely with scientific and technical experts from the Consortium for Ocean-Sea Ice Modelling in Australia (COSIMA) working group to develop and improve the ocean and sea ice models. We also participate in large international projects (e.g., CICE and MOM6 consortium).

Engage with us

If you’re interested in learning more about our work or collaborating with us, we invite you to engage with our team, share your concerns or priorities regarding climate model software or attend the weekly COSIMA Community Working Group meetings, which are open to anyone, especially early-career researchers and students, fostering collaboration within the ocean and sea ice modelling community. Your feedback is invaluable as we strive to improve our systems and support the research community effectively.

The COSIMA Working Group has its own website, see the onboarding information to get started and the bespoke acknowledgements for members who benefit from COSIMA and ACCESS-NRI.
