In conversation with Tommy Gatti
On this ACCESStory issue, we had a chat with Tommy Gatti, Research Software Engineer in the ACCESS Model release team.
Where did you grow up and how did you come to be part of the ACCESS-NRI team?
I’m happy to say that I grew up on farmland on the Mid North Coast where I got my daily iron intake drinking the water (*wink wink) and moved to the big city in Canberra for a Bachelor of Advanced Computing/Bachelor of Arts.
I joined the ACCESS-NRI after university and some industry work because I wanted to get back into the University system and it’s been one of my best decisions.
Tell us a bit about your career before ACCESS-NRI
Before the ACCESS-NRI, I did a bit of work in Government, in SATCOM and Space Domain Awareness spaces, working on the automated build and deployment of C drivers and other bits of container-based software.
What do you do at ACCES-NRI and what excites you about this work?
At ACCESS-NRI, I’m part of the Model Release Team. Specifically, I’ve been working on the automated testing, building and deployment of climate models and their configurations. It’s awesome being able to automate tasks that people consider busywork, and I love being able make developers lives easier, as I am one!
What do you like to do outside work?
I’m an avid Old School Runescape fan, and have recently got into the habit of swimming a lot more now that I’ve moved to Manly. It’s hard work!
Fun fact about you?
I’m a black belt in karate, believe it or not!
