ACCESS-NRI participation at AMOS

February 20, 2024

The Australian Earth System Simulator (ACCESS-NRI) team participated in the AMOS Conference held in the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra this year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Society.

Despite the rain and hot weather our event “”Meet and Greet the ACCESS-NRI Team” drew a large crowd, with more than 100 participants. We enjoyed connecting with the community, sharing our overall mission and what each of our teams do, and making new connections. A special thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this event.

During the Conference itself, our team was represented by Andy Hogg (who was elected AMOS fellow during the conference), Claire Carouge, Heidi Nettlebeck, Paul Leopardi, Chermelle Engel, Benjamin Schroeter and Natalia Bateman. In addition, Lauren Vieira, Victoria Allen, Roger Edberg, Jasmeen Kaur and Harshula Jayasuriya supported the AMOS Workshop day on the first day (Monday ) of the Conference.

Andy Hogg, Julie Arblaster and Tilo Zienh, chaired a lunch discussion on “Co-creating the future CMIP7”, which provided an update on the activities of the CMIP panel and task teams,as well as recent progress in the preparation for the Australia’s CMIP7 submission.

ACCESS-NRI Research software engineers Dougie Squire and Ezhilsabareesh Kannadasan where co-authors on the presentation “The next-generation ACCESS-OM3 ocean – sea ice – wave model , presented by Andrew E Kiss and also co-authors by Micael Oliveira.

We hope everyone had the opportunity to visit our booth and chat with the ACCESS-Team members.

Several conference presentations showcased research that it is only possible using the ACCESS models and configurations. Many of them also acknowledged the importance of being part of the ACCESS community through the Community Working Groups. These included (and there are probably more, that I missed, so let me know if you know about others):

  • Developing ACCESS-ESM1.5 for the past warm world of the Miocene (David K Hutchinson, Katrin J Meissner, Laurie Menviel)
  • Impacts of Pacific Ocean SST bias and variability in the ACCESS-CM2 model (Sebastian McKenna, Agus Santoso, Alex Sen Gupta, Andréa S Taschetto and Pascal Terray)
  • Simulations of early Holocene climate variability in the Australian region from ACCESS-ESM1.5 model (Yanxuan Du, Josephine Brown)
  • Impact of AMOC shutdown on Australian precipitation under PI and LIG boundary conditions (Himadri Saini, Laurie Menviel, Gabriel Pontes)
  • The next-generation ACCESS-OM3 ocean – sea ice – wave model (Andrew E Kiss, Micael Oliveira, Dougie Squire, Ezhilsabareesh Kannadasan)
  • ACCESS High-resolution Regional Modelling Project (AUS2200): A Community-based Platform for Weather and Climate Research (Yi Huang, Todd Lane, Hooman Ayat, Chun-Hsu Su, Scott Wales, Dale Roberts, Holger Wolff, Claire Vincent, Charmaine Franklin, Martin Dix, Christian Jakob)
  • A machine learning approach for evaluating Southern Ocean cloud-radiative biases in ACCESS (Sonya L. Fiddes1, Marc D. Mallet1, Alain Protat2,1, Matthew T. Woodhouse3,1, Simon P. Alexander4,1, Kalli Furtado5
  • The Southern Ocean as the freight train of the global climate under zero-emission scenarios with ACCESS-ESM1.5 Matthew A Chamberlain1, Tilo Ziehn2, Rachel Law2
  • Simulating atmospheric composition in ACCESS Matthew T Woodhouse1, Fraser Dennison1, Ashok Luhar1, Sonya Fiddes2, Rebecca Jackson1

It was a great event and we are looking forward to participate again next time!
